Digital Stories

An opportunity arose in Autumn 2007 to link the UDSET work with a ‘digital stories’ project funded by the Big Lottery.

Digital stories are a powerful means of allowing the voices of the people who use services and carers to be heard. They are told in the storyteller’s own words and voice, and combine still images and music.

The creation of digital stories supports active and meaningful participation. While storytellers may be helped to shape their care experiences into short stories, they retain editorial control.

The project is piloting the digital storytelling approach with three partnerships, with a view to developing a toolkit to support its application in various local care contexts.

The use of digital stories is also being explored within other JIT action areas including Intermediate Care, Housing and Telecare.

Whose Care, Whose Lives

The project has also produced a collection of digital stories entitled “Whose Care, Whose Lives”. These stories highlight the impact that care services have on the quality of life for the vulnerable, reinforcing the evidence from the UDSET.

They have already been used to good effect at two national events and a number of local events. The story collection is being distributed on DVD to all 32 health and social partnerships.

A selection of these stories can also be downloaded from our Digital Story Library together with stories since created that capture experiences of using the UDSET in practice.
