Building a Managed Care Network in Lanarkshire

JIT has discussed the development of a Managed Care network model with North and South Lanarkshire Health and Social Care Partnerships. This model will allow older people better access to health and social care services across acute and community settings, including housing, transport and services provided by voluntary organisations. The Managed Care Network model will help deliver better outcomes for older people in Lanarkshire in line with local and national priorities and targets. Specifically, it aims to:

  • Develop a framework to support integrated single system working for older people's services across acute and community settings;
  • Help Partnership groups in Lanarkshire to integrate health and social care across organisational boundaries;
  • Deliver a Lanarkshire-wide joint strategy, action plan and financial framework for older people's services in line with emerging national strategy for older people;
  • Enrich users and carers' experience, improve quality and deliver better outcomes through developing staff roles, skills and competencies; and
  • Help NHS Lanarkshire and its partners to meet Local Delivery Plans and Local Improvement Targets.

These outcomes will be entirely consistent with the five fundamental principles of public service reform:

  • User focus;
  • Quality and innovation;
  • Efficiency and productivity;
  • Joining up; and
  • Accountability.

JIT is supporting the MCN work in Lanarkshire. We hope that outcomes from this work will provide a good opportunity to share information with other partnerships that may wish to undertake similar projects.

MCN Lanarkshire Report

At the end of April we co-hosted an event in Lanarkshire with Lanarkshire's Health and Social Care partnerships. The purpose of the event was to explore the potential for further developing MCN work in the area. A conference report will be available on our website in early July, as soon as feedback is received from the partnerships.

Lanarkshire MCN Scoping Report

This Scoping Paper was written by Professor Bob Hudson, a member of the JIT Action Group. It looks at definitions of a managed care network, the determinants of network effectiveness, and constructs an outline framework for the evaluation of networks. Although specifically written to contribute to the development of a Managed Care Network for Older People in Lanarkshire, it has many wider messages and references that we hope will be useful across Scotland.
