Prior to this post East Lothian service users who are admitted to any of the Edinburgh Acute hospitals have to be referred to and assessed by the hospital SW if they require an assessment for a possible care home placement. Due to the demand on the hospital SW service, East Lothian service users often had to wait to be allocated and then once the assessment has been completed the SW has to liaise with East Lothian Council regarding vacancies and funding. This in turn could increase the length of stay in an acute bed.

Increasing the supply of housing suitable for older people is a key priority in the South Lanarkshire Local Housing Strategy, 2012 – 2017, both in terms of meeting current demand and the significant projected increase in the 65+ population.  At 31 March 2013, there were 2177 applicants on the council’s housing register for sheltered and amenity housing, with only 273 properties becoming available for let in 2012/13.

Closer Working with Housing

Within Inverclyde there are six RSL’s, three of  which are national providers which operate specialist housing for disability and older people.  There was a lack of a cohesive approach to implementing the local housing strategy across the CHCP therefore dedicated OT time was sought to develop closer working and appropriate processes.

Reviewing and refining processes across services and organisations.  Influencing choice based letting to ensure that those who have difficulty engaging with the bidding processes were supported.  Working with RSL’s to influence housing allocations and adaptations, and to carry out site surveys to ensure appropriate allocations for those with complex housing needs.  Strengthening the links to allow housing colleagues access to CHCP services.   Signposting RSL’s to link with 3rd sector organisations to provide social activities within sheltered housing complexes.
