Home Buddies/Garden Buddies

What was the issue you were addressing or working on?

Life Transition/ Independent Living/Social Isolation

What you did?

Bob became aware of Garden Buddies through community benefit landscape/garden projects. He asked garden buddies to help with his garden so he and his wife could enjoy their garden together, sadly Bob took ill and died before it was completed. Garden Buddies decided to carry on and finish the project as he had wanted as a mark of respect. The young garden buddies continue to maintain the garden. This continued contact with Bob’s wife Anita at a very difficult time led to a Home Buddie being assigned. This provided practical and emotional support at what was a key transition time. The Buddies have ensured Anita can now continue to live independently in her own home and enjoy the garden Bob always wanted for her. The home buddies have enabled Anita to build her confidence and remain socially connected to her local community.

Garden Buddy service followed by Home Buddy service. Both these services receive funding from the Change Fund

What were the outcomes - benefits or otherwise?

The Zone provided support initially to a couple and subsequently to a widow.  By providing older people access to local support services we can help them remain independent in their own homes for as long as possible.
