What was the issue you were addressing or working on?
Invigor8 is an evidence based exercise programme for Falls Prevention for people over 65 who are at risk of fall. This community based programme is suitable for those who have a fear of falling, feel unstable, have a history of falling, have low bone density or family history of osteoporotic fracture.
What you did?
The programme in North Ayrshire consists of weekly classes over a year, focusing on function based activities incorporating strength and balance exercises, delivered by specialist exercise instructors qualified in Postural Stability Staff work closely with participants to identify specific areas concern or issues and use exercises and activities to address these. Classes take place in a variety of venues – sports centre, community or church halls.
The programme is resourced to provide 2264 hours physical activity consultant, project equipment, marketing and promotion materials, staff training and travel expenses and community venue hire.
What were the outcomes - benefits or otherwise?
Invigor8 project outcomes include:
- Older people are active more often
- Older people with a fear or history of falls have access to falls prevention classes within their own community
- Older people have a reduced fear of falling
- Older people have less admissions to hospital as a result of a fall
- Older people maintain or improve their strength and balance
The North Ayrshire Change Fund Plan also recognises that this programme will contribute towards a range of specific national outcomes.
