Maintaining consistent quality of provision across the independent sector is a challenge, and reduced quality and Care Inspectorate ratings has resulted in reduced places available and contributed to delays in discharge from hospital.  This project will support the sector to achieve greater consistency in service quality through developing a Workforce Development Framework with agreed core development standards which align with national standards. Freeing up staff for training is also an issue.

The type of break traditionally offered to older people and their carers through Adult Wellbeing is a one or two week stay in a care home which suits many older people but not all. There is a shortage of places for breaks in care homes that can be booked in advance which limits choice and can make the process of arranging a break quite pressured.  There are also some older people for whom a stay in a care home is not an appropriate option.

Supported Discharge Social Worker

Prior to this post East Lothian service users who are admitted to any of the Edinburgh Acute hospitals have to be referred to and assessed by the hospital SW if they require an assessment for a possible care home placement. Due to the demand on the hospital SW service, East Lothian service users often had to wait to be allocated and then once the assessment has been completed the SW has to liaise with East Lothian Council regarding vacancies and funding. This in turn could increase the length of stay in an acute bed.
