A good quality home is at the heart of independent living. For those who need care and support to be able to live their lives to the full, a home which provides them with the right type of house, in the right location, is a key requirement.

The great majority of people, including those with severe disabilities and long term conditions, already live in ordinary housing – not in hospitals or care homes – and this is where they want to stay. The need for quality housing and housing services will become more important over the next decades as a result of both the increase in the number of older people and the long standing policy objective of successive Scottish governments to shift the balance of care still further away from institutional settings.
